Breakfast and off to Urbina Bay and another wet landing.
This bay is at the foot of Alcedo Volcano and was uplifted from the sea in 1954.
During our walk we had a few bright coloured iguanas sharing the path. at the point we turned to return – we saw coral – this is now well above sea level and was no longing growing. There was a lot of Flora and wildlife established since 1954.
During Lunch we motored to Tagus Cove – the waters around here are the coldest and most productive in the Galapagos due to the upwelling of the Cromwell current. We spotted water sprouts from whales and I managed to get a photo as it came out of the water. But it did not dive – so we missed the tail.
Time for snorkelling and Kayaking.
After they had got changed we went ashore – dry landing – to see some of the names of ships carved into the rock ( now prohibited).
A short climb up – some steps to help and we were above an inland lagoon. Because we were above it – it looked like the water level was higher than that of the sea – but this was not in fact the truth. Funny how the eyes and mind plays tricks on you. We continued up until we got to the top of a small rocky hill – this gave us great views of the lava flows from the Darwin Volcano.
Back to the pangas for a ride alone the bay – to see some birds and to get some great sunset photos. Now what we in NZ do not realise – near the Equator the Sunrise and Sunset is very quick. As you looked at the big round ball called the sun – lets say about 6 inches above the horizon – it only takes minutes for it to fall into the sea. ( At home this same distance might take 20 minutes) Then back to the Beluga for dinner.
